How to choose an AI chatbot platform: 10 questions
How to choose an AI chatbot platform: ten practical questions on language, accuracy, channels, privacy and cost to ask any provider before you sign.
Here is how to choose an AI chatbot platform for customer service: test it with your own customers' real messages and ask every provider the same ten questions about language, accuracy, channels, handover, data and cost before you pay. Almost every provider promises instant replies and more sales; the differences only show once the system answers your real customers. If they write in Albanian, add one filter at the start: is Albanian actually supported, or just "any language" with no guarantee?
How to choose an AI chatbot platform: start with your problem
Before comparing platforms, be clear about what you need. An online store in Tirana that loses orders at night has different needs from a clinic in Prishtina that answers questions about opening hours all day, or a hotel in Ksamil answering tourists in three languages. Answer these briefly:
- How many messages do you get per day, and on which channels?
- Which questions repeat most often?
- Who on your team will supervise the agent and take the conversations that need a person?
- How will you measure success after a month?
Language and understanding
1. Does it speak real Albanian, or translated Albanian?
Many systems write correct but stiff Albanian that sounds translated. More important is whether they understand Albanian as customers write it: without ë and ç, with abbreviations and dialect words like "qysh" ("how"). Try "a e keni ket ne te zeze, sa osht?" ("do you have this in black, how much is it?"). We cover this in AI chatbot in Albanian: challenges and solutions. If you serve tourists or the diaspora, check that it also replies in English, Italian or the customer's own language.
2. Does it understand the context of the conversation?
After a question about a jacket, the next message might just be "po në të zezë?" ("and in black?"). Test the platform with conversations of five or six messages, not isolated questions.
Accuracy and honesty
3. What does it do when it doesn't know the answer?
This is the most important question. Even the most advanced large language models can invent information with great confidence, known as AI hallucination. A made-up price or a wrong "yes, we have it" costs more than no answer at all. Ask about a product you don't sell and a rule you have never written down. The right answer is "we don't have it" or "let me check with the team", not a guess. More on this in why AI makes up answers.
4. Where does it get information about your business, and how is it updated?
Ask which sources the agent learns from: your website, your catalog, documents you upload, information you write yourself. Then ask what happens when a price changes. Does the agent pick it up by itself, or do you have to upload a new file every week?
Channels and team
5. Which channels does it work on?
Your customers probably write on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and your website. Does the platform cover all of them in one inbox, or will your team jump between apps? For Meta channels, ask whether it connects through Meta's official APIs.
6. How does the team take over a conversation?
No AI should work without people nearby. Check:
- Can a colleague take over a conversation at any moment?
- Does the agent hand over by itself when it isn't sure, and with what information?
- Is it clear in the inbox which conversations are waiting for a person?
7. Does it learn from your team?
When a colleague answers a question the agent didn't know, does that answer become knowledge, and who approves it? Otherwise the same questions will land on your team forever.
Data and the law
8. Where does customer data go, and who owns it?
Conversations contain names, phone numbers, addresses and sometimes sensitive information. Ask who owns the conversation data, your business or the provider; whether it is used for anything other than serving your customers; and whether the provider has a clear, readable privacy policy.
In Europe, the basic framework is the GDPR; in Albania, the authority responsible for data protection is the Information and Data Protection Commissioner. Read our article on GDPR and AI in customer service too. The EU Artificial Intelligence Act also sets, among other things, transparency obligations for systems that chat with people. This is general information; for your specific case, consult a lawyer.
Costs and the trial
9. How is the price calculated, and what isn't included?
Providers charge per reply, per conversation, per inbox user, per active contact or with credit packages. Ask about setup fees, channels paid separately and, for WhatsApp, Meta's own messaging fees. Above all, ask what happens when you go over the limit: does the agent stop answering mid-day, right when a campaign multiplies your messages? Work out the cost for normal months and your busiest ones.
10. Can you test it with your own data before paying?
A demo with a sample shop shows something, but not everything. A simple test plan:
- Collect 20–30 real questions from last month's messages.
- Add difficult ones: a product you don't have, a message in dialect, an Instagram screenshot.
- Judge whether it answers correctly and in your business's tone, not just whether it answers.
- Test the handover to the team too.
How AsistentiAI answers these questions
Since we are one of the providers, here are our short answers, so you can compare them with the others:
- Language and context: answers 24/7 in Albanian, English or the customer's language, and understands dialect words and short follow-ups.
- Honesty: doesn't invent prices, stock or rules; when unsure, it hands the conversation to the team with a summary and a draft reply, marked "Needs you".
- Sources: your website, your catalog (for online stores, the product list stays in sync) and what you add in the dashboard.
- Channels and team: Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and website chat in one inbox, where the team can take over at any time; Meta channels connect only through Meta's official APIs, with your own Facebook login.
- Learning and data: a colleague's answer becomes knowledge with the business's approval, and your business's data stays your business's.
- Cost and trial: from $120 per month, priced per agent reply rather than per user, and going over the limit never cuts a conversation off (see pricing). Request a free trial with 50 agent replies and no credit card, or open the live demo now.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look for in an AI chatbot platform?
Start with the language your customers actually write in, then accuracy (does it make things up?), handover to your team, the channels it covers, data ownership and the real monthly cost.
Can I try an AI chatbot for free before buying?
Many providers offer a demo or a trial. Use it with your own messages, not only the sample questions. AsistentiAI has a live demo and a free trial with 50 agent replies, no credit card.
Should I choose a ready platform or a custom chatbot?
A custom build can fit very specific needs, but usually comes with an upfront cost and takes time. A ready platform lets you decide based on what you see.
The right platform isn't the one with the most impressive demo, but the one that behaves well with your real customers, on ordinary days and on the busiest ones. Take these ten questions, run the same tests with every provider and decide on what you see, not on what you are promised.
